Atar is a blend revolving around the scent of ginger primarily, with support from chilli, yuzu, Timur pepper and tagates.
This is a fiery, spicy blend, with a clean, yellow floral profile, evolved from previous attars: Spice, Fenix & Resol.
Recently I have been craving ginger. I adore the smell and taste, and often make tea with it.
I wanted to explore the scent deeply and make a radiant, fiery floral blend, that captures the essence of ginger, with some fantasy styling.
I used ginger essential oil, absolute and an oleo resin, to get a full spectrum of ginger scent, as well as galangal and plai to add more dimension. These were blended with almaciga absolute, benzoin and a fragrant guggul tincture to make a spicy, warm, complimentary base.
Saffron and and henna are also used for bringing more exotic elements into the profile, but the main accompaniment to the ginger is tagetes patula and calendula officinalis. These 2 florals provide a beautiful layered mid note for the ginger to rest on, while accentuating the warmth of the calendula and tagetes.
Smelling from the applicator, Atar has a fresh, uplifting, zesty, spicy scent. This stuff really pops my eyes open. Despite being a hot, fiery blend, this really suits my Spring mood, it invigorates me and puts pep in my step, not feeling cloying or overly hot in the sun. The citrus notes help make this more refreshing and enlivening.
There is an exotic feel to Atar, it resembles Indian distilled attars, but that is not where the name comes from. This most resembles a spicy shamama, but definitely not a traditional take on that profile.
This is a straight forward scent, not too complex. It has several aspects: ginger spice, fiery zingy pepper, zesty citrus, warm, clean yellow floral notes and a radiant woody base of Wild Khao Yai agarwood. There are more subtle elements too, such as creamy beeswax, citrus base notes of copal macho and warm dusty notes of red smyrna.
Smelling on the skin, Atar opens with a fiery, ginger blast, backed by lush notes of tagetes and calendula. The citrus notes are sparkling and harmonious with the ginger profile.
There is a clean, creamy quality to the scent, it feels solid and supported. Initially the ginger notes were difficult to make stable on the skin, but the calendula and tagetes help so much with creating a perfect layer for them to settle on. The citrus elements are wild, they come from both directions, zingy top notes of yuzu, and deep base notes of zesty copal macho, these citrus notes do not degrade with time either, as they're not ephemeral like most citrus essential oils. which have a lifespan of only 1 or 2 years in their fresh form.
As Atar settles, it becomes more oud-like in it's profile, the Wild Khao Yai oud has some similarities to the ginger, it has a spicy, woody, boozy profile, a little like barrel aged spirits.
There is a little rum Co2 in this too, helping to create more links from the top notes to bottom notes.
