440 Baitylos
Baitylos is my natural interpretation of the well known Hajr Al-Aswad attar.
I set out to make a stoney, mineralic, floral musk, with a soft, soapy quality.
Baitylos is a fine balance between clean rose, powdery musk and earthy, stone-like elements.
This is made with several unique materials. Nepalese Guggul being the main one.
This is a soapy, warm, rich resin with a very unique aroma. As soon as I smelled this, it took reminded me of the scent of Hajr Al-Aswad, I could see it being the core of a new blend.
I used a 5 year old Mongolian deer musk, macerated in Taif Rose essential oil for the lush floral notes, and a touch of jasmine and ambrette to give more juiciness to the rose and powdery touches to the Guggul. The Taif rose is also supported by Bulgarian rose concrete and centifolia rose absolute.
The base is made with vintage Thai oud from Justin at Scentsbyskanda, and earthy Wild Khao Yai oud. I used Somali myrrh and Omani myrrh to add contrast to the rose, and add those earthy, stone-like elements to the foundations..
For detailing, I used breuzinho eo and absolute, with it's stony, uplifting profile,
Rivae frankincense to add to those mineralic qualities,
Tolu Balsam to add a delicate sweetness and cypriol for meditative complimentary elements.
Smelling from the applicator, Baitylos has a lush, juicy, floral scent, with the best qualities of rose.
The support notes for the rose are very harmonious, warm, rich resins merge with the rose, creating the feeling of rose climbing from the roots of the base up to the top canopies.
It also has a soft, soapy quality, from the rose and deer musk interacting with the guggul. It is not overbearing, but very present in the character.
This is essentially 3 main notes supported by a range of similar and contrasting materials.
Taif Rose: Supported by jasmine, ambergris, Bulgarian rose & centifolia rose
Deer Musk: Providing a contrasting soft animalic note and enhancing all materials present.
Guggul: Providing the warm, resinous base that fills the mid notes and influences top notes, supported with myrrh, breuzinho, rivae frankincense, red smyrna and black copal.
Smelling on the skin, Baitylos opens with a lush, musky, clean rose scent, backed with an earthy, stone-like foundation. Rich resins, bolster the feeling of a sacred stone structure adorned in rose scented cloth.
While Eucabid is like a stone jasmine, Baitylos is like a stone rose. Both made in very different ways, but the theme of minerals and dusty, ancient temples carries through.
The earthy notes are just enough that it supports the rose, any more and it would make this a very different feeling scent, as myrrh and rose can be difficult to balance right.
